HISTORY | ||
“Class, we have a new student joining us today,” is a phrase that aptly sums up Heejin’s childhood. Heejin and her family have been moving homes ever since she was five, thanks to her mom’s line of work. Each home brought a new set of friends, a new set of experiences, and a new set of lessons to be learned. But with each move, there was always something left behind. Heejin never understood what it meant to have a “best” friend. Her sisters and father were all that she had to fit the role. But to compare it to the times acquaintances would introduce her to their childhood friends, cousins or relatives, who just so happened to live around the corner from their own home, it felt different — the kind of different that left an indefinable ache in her heart, like she knew there was something big she was missing out on. Even if Heejin didn’t have best friends, at least she had her sisters, and they were her everything. They were her biggest influencers and role models. In her eyes, they were the perfect examples of what she wanted to be. Unfortunately, she could never quite match up to them. Failure was something Heejin experienced a lot in life. It was never easy to receive that letter of rejection, but that was just how things turned out for her. Over time, it got easier to handle and somehow she never got discouraged from it. Her determination to turn out just like her older sisters always won over the feeling of thinking she wasn’t good enough. While she aspired to be like her sisters, she had one more person she looked up to: her dad. (Her mom was a workaholic, so she wasn’t around enough for Heejin to feel a great bond with her.) Her dad was her rock, while she was his muse. Not to say that he was outright calling her his favorite, but because of her magical abilities, which she had showcased as a toddler, he gained inspiration from watching her (although he had assumed that it was all a dream). From this, he created a children’s book entitled ‘Magical Days’. It was filled with anecdotes and illustrations of his struggles as an ordinary father trying his best to take care of his magical daughter, whom he had given the name ‘Berry’. ( An excerpt from Magical Days: ❝Sometimes, I find Berry’s toys in the most peculiar of places. They’re in places I know that she cannot reach. Sometimes they’re tucked away into our highest shelves or hidden inside drawers that are locked. I’ve even found some dangling from the top of our roof! I had to use our rickety ladder to climb up and get them back for her. If you’re thinking that she couldn’t have possibly put them in those places all on her own and that someone must have helped her… and if I were a father who didn’t know any better, I would think that you’re right. But… we’d be wrong. Oh, so very wrong indeed. For my little Berry has quite the secret — and it’s a magical one.❞ ) Sometime during August, after unpacking all their things in their latest home in London, a snowy owl appeared out of nowhere, perched on their balcony with a letter in its beak. When they opened the letter which had been addressed specifically to Heejin’s bedroom, it was the moment that the truth of little ‘Berry’ came to light. It was shocking for her parents to find out that their youngest daughter was actually a witch, but after having a teacher from the wizarding school come by to explain the details to the skeptical parents (after her dad embarrassingly enough asked for a demonstration of their “magic tricks”, which he won’t admit to almost fainting to), they finally accepted it. And as for Heejin — What was one more move to an unknown place? |

ABILITIES/SKILLS | ||
{ CORE } Heejin knows she’s far behind from everyone else in their knowledge of magical things, a common struggle for muggleborns who had no idea magic existed until receiving their letters. Unfortunately, this is an insecurity that grows within her every time she fails to cast a charm or when she’s unable to name the person responsible for defeating the Dark Lord (?!) — someone everyone else seemed to know by heart. There are two subjects that she seems to have more of an instinctive understanding in though. Potions reminded her of cooking, while Herbology was something hard to get away from since the Hufflepuff common room was heavily decorated with magical plants, courtesy of the upperclassmen. It was always a learning experience for her whenever she had to crawl back to her room in time for bed. { ELECTIVES } Heejin’s chosen elective classes are Muggle Studies, thankfully a no-brainer class for her, Divination, a class she finds silly yet strangely intriguing at the same time, and the Study of Ancient Runes, which was actually really interesting but required a lot of memorization. { SINGING } She may have failed in getting into the choir club back in high school, but it hasn’t deterred her love for singing. She’s really not that horrible, but maybe with enough practice, she could probably sing a whole song without her voice cracking at the high parts. { GUITAR } So she may not be an excellent singer, but she can play the guitar pretty well! She’s no Santana, but she’s got a natural ability to play songs by ear. |

EXTRA FACTS | ||
{ HUFFLEPUFF } The concept of getting sorted and the whole school being divided into four houses confused her, so she didn’t think much of it when she was sorted into Hufflepuff. She isn’t beyond admitting to being nervous during the sorting event though because — who wouldn’t be! The sorting hat looked extremely old and intimidating. { WAND } 10” Alder wood, unicorn hair core and pleasantly springy. { FEAR } Due to a traumatic experience with them when she was a lot younger, Heejin has a great fear of birds. Owls, no matter how cute or pretty they looked, were no exception. It sucked that she couldn’t just text her family due to the signal not being able to reach in Hogwarts — Something about it being a restricted area. It took her a whole month to finally work up the courage to let them know that she was alright. { AMORTENTIA } The dusty smell of graphite, the fragrance of cedar, and the aroma that comes from stepping into a bakery. { PATRONUS } Later through the years, when they start learning about the Expecto Patronus spell, she’ll find out that her Patronus is a Hare — her favorite animal. |
